Colorful spiral cookies made with buttery sugar cookie dough — perfect for parties, holidays, or baking with kids.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 large egg

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour

  • ½ teaspoon baking powder

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • Gel food coloring (2–3 colors of choice)

  • Optional: Sprinkles or edible glitter for garnish

Instructions

  • Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

  • Beat in egg and vanilla.

  • In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt. Add to wet ingredients and mix until just combined.

  • Divide dough into 2 or 3 portions. Tint each with gel food coloring.

  • Roll each dough portion into even rectangles (~¼ inch thick). Stack, then roll into a log from the long side.

  • Wrap in plastic and chill for 2+ hours.

  • Slice into ¼-inch rounds. Place on parchment-lined baking sheets.

  • Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 8–10 minutes. Cool before serving.

Notes

  • Dough can be made ahead and chilled for up to 3 days.

  • Freeze the log for up to 3 months.

  • Experiment with seasonal colors and flavors.
