Colorful spiral cookies made with buttery sugar cookie dough — perfect for parties, holidays, or baking with kids.
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
Gel food coloring (2–3 colors of choice)
Optional: Sprinkles or edible glitter for garnish
Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
Beat in egg and vanilla.
In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt. Add to wet ingredients and mix until just combined.
Divide dough into 2 or 3 portions. Tint each with gel food coloring.
Roll each dough portion into even rectangles (~¼ inch thick). Stack, then roll into a log from the long side.
Wrap in plastic and chill for 2+ hours.
Slice into ¼-inch rounds. Place on parchment-lined baking sheets.
Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 8–10 minutes. Cool before serving.
Dough can be made ahead and chilled for up to 3 days.
Freeze the log for up to 3 months.
