Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour

  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast

  • 1 cup warm milk or water

  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar

  • 1 tsp salt

  • ¼ cup melted butter or olive oil

  • 1 large egg (optional)

  • 2 tbsp butter, for brushing

Garlic Butter Topping:

  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter

  • 2 garlic cloves, finely minced

  • 1 tbsp chopped parsley or chives

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, mix warm milk/water with sugar and yeast. Let it sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.

  • Stir in melted butter, salt, and egg if using.

  • Gradually mix in flour, stirring with a spoon until a shaggy dough forms. Knead by hand for 8–10 minutes until smooth.

  • Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise 60–90 minutes until doubled.

  • Punch down dough, divide into 12 pieces, and shape into balls.

  • Place in greased 9×13-inch dish, cover, and rise again for 30–45 minutes.

  • Preheat oven to 375°F. Bake for 18–22 minutes or until golden.

  • Melt butter in a small pan, add garlic and parsley. Brush over hot rolls.

  • Serve warm.

Notes

Make ahead by refrigerating dough after first rise. Add cheese or fresh herbs for variation. Rolls can be frozen baked or unbaked.
