Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs
1 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup unsalted butter melted
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup hot coffee
1 cup unsalted butter softened for frosting
6 ounces dark chocolate melted
3 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder for frosting
1/3 cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract for frosting

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F and prepare two 8-inch cake pans.

  • Mix dry ingredients in one bowl and wet ingredients in another.

  • Combine mixtures and stir in hot coffee.

  • Divide batter into pans and bake 28 to 32 minutes.

  • Cool completely.

  • Beat butter, add cocoa powder and powdered sugar alternately with cream.

  • Stir in melted chocolate and vanilla.

  • Frost between layers and over cake.

Use room temperature ingredients for smooth batter and frosting.
